Escapes to Barrie and Newmarket

 

PART 1:

Nigel is back in Barrie, visiting The MacLaren Art Centre [www.maclarenart.com], home to a large collection of art and a wide variety of programs open to the public. 

DID YOU KNOW…

Ron Baird’s Spirit Catcher sculpture, part of the gallery’s permanent collection, located on the waterfront, has become a focal point for Barrie. But it was actually commissioned for Expo 86 in Vancouver and then moved to its present location a year later.

About MacLaren Arts Centre

ABOUT:

The MacLaren Art Centre has a permanent collection of 26,600 works of art and presents a year-round program of exhibitions, public art projects and special events. It is housed in the historic former Carnegie library building with a contemporary addition designed by Siamak Hariri.

In addition to several galleries and a sculpture court, it offers courses for adults and children, with a gift shop, framing department and excellent café.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Centre is located at:

37 Mulcaster Street, Barrie, Ontario
(diagonally opposite City Hall)

From the intersection of Hwy 401 and 400, head north on Hwy 400 about 50 minutes to Barrie. Take the Bayfield Street South exit and follow it south for about 5 minutes to the intersection with Collier Street. Turn left or east and the Art Centre is about 2 minutes on your right at the intersection with Mulcaster Street. Street. Parking is available outside the centre.

About Holland Marsh Wineries

ABOUT:

On the edge of Holland Marsh is a narrow strip of sandy soil, left behind by retreating Ice Age glaciers, which provides perfect land for vines.

Holland Marsh Winery was established in 2008 in the shadow of the surrounding hills, which additionally create an ideal micro-climate for a vineyard. Using European traditional methods, they produce a range of red, white and ice wines which are exclusively available for sale in their on-site store.

HOW TO GET THERE

The vineyard, winery and wine store are located at:

18270 Keele Street, Newmarket, Ontario

From the intersection of Hwy 401 and Hwy 400, head north for about 25 minutes to the Hwy 9 East exit. Head east about 3 minutes to the Keele Street intersection. Turn north about 5 minutes to the winery which will be on the left. Parking is available at the wine shop. Please note: some GPS models will not register this location.
